We'll never promise you'll rank in ChatGPT or get cited by AI Overviews. Nobody controls that, and any tool that says otherwise is selling you something. What we can do is fix everything on your end: that's the whole deal.
Four categories, seventeen checks, each one something an AI system genuinely needs to crawl, parse, or trust your site, not a vanity metric. Here's the complete list.
None of the rest matters if the crawler is never let in. This category checks whether AI systems can physically reach your pages.
GPTBot isn't blocked in robots.txt
GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler: the one that feeds ChatGPT's web-browsing and training pipeline. A Disallow rule here means ChatGPT can't read your site at all.
ClaudeBot isn't blocked in robots.txt
ClaudeBot is Anthropic's crawler for Claude. Same failure mode as GPTBot: blocked here means invisible to Claude.
PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and OAI-SearchBot aren't blocked
Perplexity's own crawler, Google's AI-training/Overviews crawler, and OpenAI's search crawler, checked together since a site that blocks one of these often blocks all three by copy-pasting a blanket rule.
A sitemap.xml exists and is referenced from robots.txt
Helps every crawler, AI or otherwise, discover pages beyond the homepage without guessing at your site's structure.
An llms.txt file summarises your site for AI crawlers
An emerging, informal standard: a minor, informational signal, not a ranking factor. Missing it is a warning, not a fail.
The most direct way to tell an AI system what your business actually is, rather than leaving it to infer from prose. The largest single category for exactly that reason.
Organization or LocalBusiness JSON-LD is present
A structured block identifying who you are (name, type of business, contact details) in a format AI systems can parse directly instead of guessing from your homepage copy.
Existing JSON-LD is valid, not silently broken
Malformed JSON-LD is silently ignored by crawlers. A site can have all the right structured data and still get zero credit for it if a syntax error makes it unparseable.
The homepage <title> actually describes the business
At least ten characters naming your business and what you do: the single most consistently-read signal by every crawler and AI system, human or otherwise.
A meta description summarises the page
AI systems use it as a fallback for understanding your page when structured data is thin or absent.
Exactly one clear H1, sensible heading structure
One H1 stating what your business does, other headings demoted to H2: an unambiguous page structure rather than several competing top-level headings.
Does your content actually answer the questions people ask, in a form an AI can lift and cite, or does it bury the answer in marketing copy an AI has to work to extract?
The homepage has enough substantive content to cite
Thin pages give AI systems nothing specific to lift and attribute to you: the fewer concrete facts on the page, the less an AI has to work with when deciding whether to cite you.
Key content doesn't require JavaScript to appear
AI crawlers generally don't execute JavaScript. Content that only renders client-side is often invisible to them even though a human visitor sees it fine.
A FAQ section answers common questions in plain language
One of the highest-value formats for AI answer engines specifically: a direct question paired with a direct answer is exactly the shape they're built to lift and cite.
Contact, about, and service pages are linked from navigation
Both human users and AI crawlers need to be able to find these pages from the main navigation, not just via a direct URL nobody links to.
Name, address, and phone number matching everywhere is a trust signal AI systems specifically cross-check before treating a business as real and citable.
A phone number is visible on the site
AI systems look for this to confirm you're a real, contactable business, not a placeholder or defunct listing.
A business address is visible on the site
A key trust and entity signal, particularly for local and regulated businesses where an AI system needs to confirm you operate where you claim to.
Name, address, and phone number match across pages
The same details, consistently, everywhere they appear on your own site. Inconsistency here undermines confidence even when every individual page looks fine in isolation.
